The Beautiful Mess that Made Me

Welcome! I’m Lisa Marescalco. I’m so glad you’re here.

Powered by caffeine, dry wit, and vulnerability, I write about the beautiful chaos of motherhood: the fierce love, the endless noise, the logistical collapse of personal time — and the slow, stubborn work of becoming myself again. My stories live where humor meets heartbreak, where family absurdities collide with real tenderness, and where survival often looks like locking myself in the closet at midnight with chocolate.

I explore identity, post-divorce dating misadventures, reinvention, and the questionable decisions that make life interesting. If you’ve ever locked yourself in the bathroom just to breathe, pull up a chair. You’re among friends.

Welcome to the mayhem, the honesty, and the quiet moments that stitch life back together.

The journey ...

I started this book in 2015. Then, I let it sit. It’s not because I didn’t have anything to say. Life has never been short on material. I let it sit because finishing it would mean standing behind it. And that felt bigger than I was ready for.

My mom would’ve bought thirty-seven copies. Probably forty, if there was a coupon involved. This is the same woman who once told me my construction paper Christmas ornaments had “real artistic potential,” so her reviews have never been what you’d call emotionally neutral. But she believed in me with Olympic-level enthusiasm, the kind that makes you want to live up to it, even when you’re mostly living on caffeine and questionable decisions.

About eleven years ago, my then sixteen-year-old daughter, Sydney, looked at me and said, “If you put as much time into your book as you do Netflix, you’d be done by now, Mom.” She wasn’t wrong. In fact, she was painfully right. And after watching nearly everything Netflix has to offer, twice, because I believe in thorough research, I decided it was time to stop almost finishing things.

Some stories are funny because they happen to everyone. Some are funny because they only seem to happen to me. Either way, life keeps delivering. The difference now is this: I’m done waiting until I feel perfectly ready.

So here it is. I finished the damn thing.

My Life.
